Online compatible : Yes - If you wish for students to use the appendix provided, you will need to send it to each student to be printed and ready for class. If not, make sure students have a pen and pencil, and some scrap paper handy and have them write out the letters of the alphabet on their own paper before beginning the game.
Age group : Best played with students aged 12 and over, as it requires an ability to spell
Materials :
Preparation time : The time taken to print Appendix C
Number of players : Works equally well in groups as in private lessons
Objective : To be the player with the most correctly spelled words after 2 minutes.
Instructions :
Students are each given copies of Appendix C. Students must think of one word that begins with each of the letters of the alphabet and correctly spell that word beside the letter. Set your timer to 2 minutes, and make your students aware that it is the time available to them before they must put down their pens. You may also feel inclined to limit the type of words to ones that relate to your lesson plan to make the activity more relevant.
After 2 minutes have elapsed, score students based on the number of letters they have successfully found words for, and whether those words have been spelt correctly. The winner is the student with the highest score.
PERMISSION IS GIVEN TO EDIT AND PRINT THE APPENDICES FOR USE IN THE CLASSROOM.
