Battleships

Online compatible : Yes - If each player has been sent their own battleship sheet, they won't need to rely on a stable internet connection to play this game, reducing the chance of problems. The game itself is easily played, but explaining the rules can be difficult. It would be prudent to give an example of a passage of play with a grid drawn on a whiteboard, and make sure that students fully understand before launching into the game.

Age group : Best played by students aged between 9 and 15

Materials :

  • A copy of Appendix B for each team

Preparation time : Time taken to print each team copies of Appendix B

Number of players : Works equally well in groups as in private classes

Objective : To be the team that scores the most points.

Instructions :

Assign yourself and your students to teams and distribute copies of appendix B to each. Have each team colour squares of the grid using the shapes at the bottom of the appendix. On each turn a student must 'fire' a shot by saying a letter from the top of the grid and a number from the side to reference a position within their opposite team's grid. If the position is a colored block, it is a “hit” and the team that fired the shot wins the number of points indicated next to the shape at the bottom of the appendix. If the box is not colored it is a “miss” and the team wins nothing. Alternate between teams after each

question. Students may not choose the same grid position twice. The team with the greatest number of points at the end is the winner.

PERMISSION IS GIVEN TO EDIT AND PRINT THE APPENDICES FOR USE IN THE CLASSROOM.
