Don’t Whack That Black!!

Online compatible : Yes - Students will need to direct the teacher to which card they wish to choose.

Age group : Best played by students aged between 6 and 10.

Materials :

  • Make multiple copies of the lesson's vocabulary printed onto small pieces paper. Colour the vocabulary side different colours (some plain blue, some plain red, some plain yellow, some plain black, and some rainbow colours, as in the picture).

Preparation time : Time taken to make the cards (Should take up to half an hour)

Number of players : Works equally well in groups as in private classes

Objective : To be the team that scores the most points.

THE GAME CARDS ABOVE WERE MADE WITH AN APPENDIX OF THE LET'S GO MANUAL. ALL RIGHTS TO THE IMAGES ARE THE PROPERTY OF OXFORD PRESS.

Instructions :

Assign yourself and your students to teams and place the vocabulary cards face down on the table. Make sure to shuffle the cards so students don't know which cards are which. Each turn a student picks (or whack) a card from the table and turns it over. If the card is a plain, non-black colour students say the associated vocabulary or sentence of the card and take that card as a point for their team. If the card is a black card, they move it to a discard pile at the side of the table along with all of the cards that they have collected so far. If the card is a rainbow and there are no discarded cards, it is taken as a point for the team, however if the card is a rainbow and there are cards on the discard pile, they may take all of the discarded cards as points, also (The black cards taken also count as one point). Once all cards have been turned over or if time is running short, have each team count the number of points they hold. The winner is the team with the most points.
