Instructions

Depending on the ages of the students, teachers may wish to either make the entire craft with the class, or just have children colour the images. With younger students, who may not be quite so dextrous with scissors, teachers would be advised to at least assemble Appendix A before class.

Assembling Appendix A

  • Cut around the outside of the rectangle of Appendix A, and remove the grey box marked "Front" so that it resemble the picture to the right.
  • Fold the paper back along the line of the appendix marked 1 and forward along the line marked 2 to resemble the picture on the right.
  • Spread glue across the grey line marked B, and stick the line to the edge of the front, marked "Glue B here".
  • Finally glue the back of the paper marked A to the edge of the front of the appendix marked "Blue A here". Appendix A is now complete.

Assembling Appendix B

  • Cut around the edges of the three boxes of Appendix B.
  • Cut a sheet of transparent plastic to the same size and shape as one of the boxes of Appendix B.
  • Spread glue over the surface of the grey box of Appendix B. Stick the clear plastic to the grey box, and let the glue dry. Appendix A is now complete.

Decorating the craft

It is from this point of the craft that teachers - certainly those teaching younger children - would be advised to do with students in class, as it involves no scissors, or sticky glue, that could make a mess. Although, teachers should still take care with children and the permanent markers.

  • Children draw a colourful spooky halloween picture on the white blank paper under the clear plastic sheet.
  • Once they have drawn their picture, they trace the outline of the picture on the surface of the clear plastic sheet with permanent marker.
  • The craft is now complete. To activate the magic, students thread the paper sheet of Appendix B through one slot of the top of Appendix A at the back, and the plastic sheet with the traced outline in the slot at the top nearest the front, and with the window. As they pull and push Appendix B in and out, the colours of the picture will now magically appear and disappear.

PERMISSION IS GRANTED TO EDIT AND PRINT THE APPENDICES FOR USE IN THE CLASSROOM.
